The artwork Wolkom ,designed for one of the entrances to the province of Friesland, consists of a three-story sculpture of a man standing right at the side of the highway on the Afsluitdijk. On the long and straight highway, the monumental artwork is already visible from far away. Bent over with his hands on his knees, the huge human figure seems to look curiously at the motorists, and to make a bow of welcome for the passing visitors.
Entering Friesland from this side, one enters the realm of the legendary giant and freedom fighter Grutte Pier, who fought for the freedom of the Frisians.
When it gets dark, a beam of light shines from the figure’s mouth, projecting the word “Wolkom” (welcome) onto the road.
