The artwork Waterhuis (House of water) is designed by visual artists Maree Blok and Bas Lugthart for the head office of KWR in Nieuwegein. The Waterhuis building in Nieuwegein houses the offices and laboratories of the Kiwa Water Research centre. The KWR conducts research on transforming polluted water into clean water.
On the facade of the main building, a large picture of a boy swimming underwater towards the viewer is displayed in stained glass. The water fills the entire glass surface of the building, which seems to become liquid with the movement of the water. Inside the building on the glass walls and ceilings, there are other images of people in contact with water.
Walking through one of the long corridors, you see a man swimming above your head with powerful strokes as if the ceiling too is under water. At another place in the building, one can see a small child jumping into the deep, clear water that appears to be behind a glass wall. Portrayed larger than life, the swimming human figures provide a visual experience of water surrounding the architecture.
