The two sculptures Great Friends are designed for the new Holland Boulevard on Schiphol airport, placed at both entrances of the lounge area next to the new Rijksmuseum Schiphol. Two enlarged figures, a girl and a boy, stand along the path, their heads nearly reaching the ceiling. Both sculptures make an inviting gesture to passing travelers as if to greet and welcome them to the “living room” of the airport. They represent what this small country is big on: hospitality and openness to visitors from around the world. Not only do they depict with humor and conviction the welcoming Dutch culture, but they also remind us that Schiphol, more than just an airport, is a dynamic hub where people and worlds meet.
