The new residential district in the town of Hoorn consists of nine “islands” connected to each other by nine special bridges. Visual artists Maree Blok and Bas Lugthart were commissioned by the municipality of Hoorn to design for one of these bridges the monumental artwork ‘Overbruggen’. The giant sculpture is cut out of solid steel and consists of a large human figure supporting himself with both hands and feet on the abutments on both sides of the water, thus spanning the entire width of the canal. The ‘bridging’ of the water and the connection between the two banks of the canal is visualized by the giant man sculpture.
On the opposite side the letters of the word OVERBRUGGEN (bridging) form the railing of the bridge.
